Curriculum for Excellence
logo

The advent of the Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) in 2010 will mean a major change in the format of learning and examinations.  It is described as the most radical education reform in Scotland for a generation.

The focus is on developing 4 capacities to enable each child to become:

  • successful learners
  • confident individuals
  • responsible citizens
  • effective contributors

As the school develops it's plans for CfE, the Parent Council aims to help to understand and shape the school policies, and to ensure effective communication with parents to share understanding on the implications of CfE and how you can help your children to get the most from it.

Aims and New Members

Tha Parent Council's development goals include:

  1. Improve Communications with parents;
    • We have setup a databse of those who have agreed to receive info. by email
  2. Help to understand and disseminate information on the move to the Curriculum for Excellence;
    • We are working with staff to understand the issues and opportunities here
  3. Promote Active Learning and community involvement across the school.
    • We promote the use of new approaches and seek to utilise the skills of parents, carers and other members of the local community.
Members include parents/carers, staff, PTA members, local co-opted members.  If you'd like to join in, just come to our next meeting or send us an email.  We are keen to attract input from new members, especially from new parents at the school.

Parent Council AGM 26th May
The Annual General Meeting of the Parent Council was held in the school on Tuesday 26th May, at 7.00pm.

Minutes of the meeting are available here and a newsletter for the last year can also be accessed here or from the Parent Council homepage.

We have recently sent a letter to South Lanarkshire Council pursuing the need to fix the lighting in the underpass, paint over the graffiti and clean up the path.  This was first identifed to the School Modernisation team in March 2008, and highlighted again (including pictures we took of the state of the underpass) in August 2008, but it has taken till now for the Council even to schedule an inspection.  Work to address this has finally been completed for the start of term, thanks to the relevant SLC staff.

We have also highlighted the fact that the pedestrian entrance has not always been open during evening events for the school, which has now been addressed.  This still leaves the issue of the gate needing to be opened to allow access to the school after hours for Leisure Trust users.  THis is the only pedestrian entrance to the campus and must be kept open during facility opening hours.

We asked the Council to consider putting railings on the pavement under the railway bridge but apparaently the pavements are to narrow to allow this and there are utilities running under them too.  The Council has a instigated 20mph zone which has been operational since the new school opened.  We will consider whether to ask the Council to investigate if there may be a longer term solution to safety at this choke point.

Regards,

Uddingston Grammar School Parent Council

Our most recent meeting was on 25th August 2009.  Minutes are here and available via the link on the right hand side of the PC home page.

Issues covered included:

1. Exam Results - excellent move from Stnadard Grade Foundation to General at Grade 3, great /higher results

2. Staffing changes

3. Parent Council 2009 Newsletter - now published here.

4. Underpass finally maintained but already graffiti'd

As announced by the school, we underwent an inspection by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education (HMIE) between 2nd and 6th March 2009.  A cross-section of parents received questionnaires from HMIE and took the opportunity to feedback on the positive aspects of the school and also on areas of challenge where you hope to see improvements.

The Parent Council fed back directly to HMIE and participated fully in the inspection process, representing parents views.  With the opportunity presented to us of a new, fit for purpose facility, renewed vigour and leadership from Mr McKay and our dedicated staff, and the challenges of the Curriculum for Change, this has been an excellent chance to baseline ourselves and set stretching targets for our future progress.
We wish to thank the staff, and pupils, for working effectively with the HMIE team, ensuring that a fair and objective review was undertaken which will reflect our strengths and support the school plans for improvement and development.

The final report has been published and is accessible on the HMIE website at: http://www.hmie.gov.uk/documents/inspection/UddingstonGrammarSchool82525331.pdf
